TRACE: A RIVER NARRATIVE

A waterfront site in Salisbury, Maryland has a history of underutilization. Currently the site of a small library and a large parking lot, the nexus of two major streets in the town lies adjacent to a bend in the Wicomico River. An early study of the town revealed significant neglect of waterfront space, void of both architecture and usable landscape. A series of studies of both the surrounding geometry of the architecture and the programmatic needs of the site established the need for a significant threshold to the landscape. The building acts as a gateway to the landscape, which is designed to be planted and utilized by locals. As a building, the gateway acts as a space for performance and art exhibition in response to a largely arts-oriented local demographic. When thrust into the foreground through framed views, the previously ignored waterfront reveals latent desires of the landscape.
